The Afghan Girl
This photo was taken in 1984 by Steve McCurry for National Geographic during the war between the Soviet Union and Afghanistan national guards. She is referred to as the 'Afghan Girl' as no one knew her name. She was an unknown face in an Afghanistan refugee camp. This photo became world famous photograph. This may have been because of the way her eyes and troubled face draws viewers closer or into the photograph. It was taken in the windows of local market shops, re-produced in paintings, circulated the globe on the cover of National Geographic… and she had no idea! Steve McCurry returned to search for the girl and with the help of American eye scanning technology…he found her. Permission from her husband had to be given before another male could see, or let alone take a photo, of her face behind her burqa. Now think back to the original photograph you saw...It was taken at Maroubra Beach in 2008. By using this photograph, we learn how this picture of the ‘Afghan girl’ has been used to represent a new discourse, a protest about the treatment of refugees in Australia and other situations like abuse against Afghan women . This photograph is still changing the world we live in!
