He is influenced by the past. He has designed buildings for Disney, Central Park, and Time Square and numerous residential projects. Those being only a few of his projects his firm is known around the world. His work is generally classified as postmodern. The importance he puts on the environment and permanence of tradition defines his work. Robert A. M. Stern is said to be the first architect to use the term postmodernism. Recently he referred to his work as “post traditionalism.” He is constantly redefining himself. By using diverse use of forms he gives buildings meaning. Museum for African Art in New York was designed by him, the new museum, which is located on 5th Avenue at the edge of Harlem twenty blocks north of the Guggenheim, is the permanent quarters for this successful institution, which use to operate out of temporary spaces for the past 22 years. The museum will be housed in the lower levels of a 19-storey luxury residential tower and will provide 92,000 square feet on three floors above grade and two below. Key features of the design are a dramatic two-storey lobby at entry with a wall made of etimoe wood from Ghana that curves upward to form the ceiling. On the exterior the museum will have trapezoidal windows with bronze-painted mullions that will rise the full height of the building.
Interesting building. The angled concrete window frames are much more successful from the interior than they are from the exterior. I would love to see the actual form of the building reflect the hexagon shaped window portals, because right now, from the outside, the shape seems too imposed on the building. What do you think?
